I researched every 10" slider I could and talked with fellow contractors about the pros and cons of the saws they use, along with my personal experiences and trade publication ratings. I was nervous about dropping this much coin on a tool that I haven't been able to try out, but I am glad I did! I chose the Jet initially for its overall design and brand reputation. It has a large cutting capacity for a 10" saw and its relatively light with convenient top side handles which makes its easier to move around for a weekend warrior or a contractor like me who does a lot of remodeling and repair work, which means shorter jobs than a setting up for a full house build.

Right out of the box the saw has a sturdy feel and everything was perfectly aligned. The green laser is in fact easier to see, especially outdoors. The slide action is incredibly smooth and the soft start of the motor eliminates that start-up-kick that many saws have. The saw is also very quiet with the belt drive and lower RPMs. The powerful motor has cut through everything I have thrown at it with no dogging down, including 4x4s and solid oak and walnut trim. The dust collection is also pretty effective. I really appreciate the lack of a safety button that has to be pressed before the trigger will engage. The detents on the miter are solid with no wiggle room and the front controls are excellent. I especially like the miter lock; rather than having to turn the handle to lock in place, there is a lever to the right of the handle that you simply push down and it pushes a small rod against the table and locks down tight. It has a hard plastic/rubber cover to prevent digging into the table and is adjustable so you can always maintain the perfect tension.

The blade is the only "down side" to the saw as you expect to see at least a 40 tooth blade for a saw designed for trim and finish work, but this comes with a 24 tooth framing blade, not that its a big deal for a contractor since we always have an assortment of blades in the trailer, but a homeowner will likely have to make a trip to the hardware store. Overall I love this saw and for the price, you really can't beat it.

GMC SYCLONE 4610 Ultra Quiet & Oil-Free Air Compressor Review

As of 7/17/10, I will have purchased and used this compressor to install a rooms worth of baseboard, toe molding and window trim, so I cannot speak to the longevity of it, but it is rated for 3000 hours.

I had never heard of GMC Power Equipment, but while visiting a local hardware store someone was purchasing this model. When the clerk fired it up, I could not believe how quiet it was, so I walked over to find out what kind of compressor the gentleman was buying.

When I arrived home, I checked the 'net for reviews, but could not find any. I did find out that GMC Power Equipment made an aluminum tanked version, which made the compressor even more tempting. The only negative I could find, and the reason I gave it four stars, is the relatively low CFM at 90 PSI. I'm splitting hairs here though, because my ultra-loud and heavy pancake compressor only manages 2.6 PSI at 90 PSI, which is plenty for finish trim nailers. Also, with this model being so quiet, you won't mind having it cycle to keep up with demand.

Needless to say I bought this compressor. When I picked it up, the clerk fired it up in the store and once again a crowd of guys gathered around to see which compressor was running so quietly. For something so quiet, it draws a crowd.

This compressor it is very well built and well balanced. It is also extremely quiet. Did I mention it's quiet? We're talking easily carry on a conversation while standing right in front of it quiet. It's amazing.

At this time I highly recommend this compressor. Unless you need the extra durability of the steel tanks (things slamming in the compressor all of the time), get the aluminum tank version for $10 more and save your back.

One thing I couldn't find online was the weight of the compressor. The aluminum version weighs about 44 pounds according the the Wii Fit board... don't tell my wife. :)

JET 708524 JPM-13CS, 13-in Closed Stand Planer/Molder Combination Machine Review

I have been using my JET planer for over 3 years. Probably have run 800 board feet through it. I have an all PorterCable or Delta tool shop, but I could not justify the price of the Delta planer, so bought JET.

It does the job, but I regret my choice. The first couple weeks of light use, it worked well. But, quickly, the unit became tempermental in how well the automatic feed would work (usually so poorly, I had to manually push the wood through). Sometime, the feed would not work at all. I think the gear box for the feed and speed control is poorly designed and undersized. Recently, I purchased some rough sawn oak. I had to plane the most wood ever. The unit finally bound up, tweaked the table and is now in the shop for repairs (first time in 3 years). The repairman says these planers are not all bad, but often need adjustment for feed control as they come from the factory. Maybe it will get better. But, I will not be buying any JET equipment again. Good tools are worth their weight in cast iron.
