The Starrett 125 series vernier caliper measures in inches and metric, has a 0.001"/0.02mm graduation, and four-way jaws for measuring the inside diameter (ID) and outside diameter (OD) of holes, grooves, and tube thicknesses, and depth and step measurements of bores and grooves. The inch scale on the caliper has an accuracy of + or - 0.001" on 0-4" measurements and + or - 0.0015" on measurements over 4"; the metric scale on the caliper has an accuracy of + or - 0.025mm for each 300mm. Sharp black graduations on a satin-finished bar ease reading. A fine-adjustment screw ensures accurate measurements and a locking screw secures the measurement tightly in place for accurate readings. The hardened stainless steel depth rod is durable and wear-resistant. The caliper includes a fitted case.

The bottom line is that the Starrett 125MEA-8/200 Vernier Caliper is suited to its task. It is smooth and accurate. I measured five items and then checked the results with micrometers. All five measurements checked out spot on. I didn't test on anything larger than 4" because I don't have a mic bigger.

Out of the box: The packaging clearly states that my 125MEA-8/200 was made in China. Although packaged well, I was quite disappointed that the action was a little gritty. They could have done a better job cleaning it before final assembly and oiling. I had to clean and re-oil it - that's a disappointment at this price point although it doesn't affect the functionality. The thumb wheel is not actually a wheel, rather a knurled grip. The plastic storage box is suitable and appears durable.

Fit and Finish: The markings are clear and easy to read -- they appear durable and will not disappear or fade over time. The action is smooth so it's well machined but the overall appearance isn't that great. I would expect that saving all that labor money, they could spend a little extra time polishing.

Other thoughts: It's not a big secret that you can do a lot better on the used market buying older made in the USA tools if you're patient and don't mind a little risk. If you don't have the time or appetite for the risk and you need accurate measurements the 125MEA-8/200 will get the job done.
