We're building a Craftsman style house and wanted a light for the entry foyer that would be a focal point for the space. We stumbled upon this light, and I knew this was it - simple and consistent with a style that would fit this style of house.

First things first - this is a very good quality light and well constructed. The finishes were first rate. The glass shades were a little thin and felt a little fragile, so you definitely need to handle with care when installing. It does come well protected and in a particularly large shipping carton. Assembly were relatively straightforward. Mounting the light can be a bit tricky as it is relatively large, so it is best to have two people do this - one to hold the light while the secures the fixture to the ceiling. There is about 6 ft of chain, so should be plenty for most applications. If you are using this in a two story foyer, you will likely need a longer chain (just go to your hardware store and buy a longer chain and paint the chain to match the color of the light).

Second, the 3 light bulbs point upwards (instead of down). This gives a nice indirect light to the foyer and light that comes out the sides of the glass casts a nice yellowish glow. The underside of the light is not covered and you can see the "guts" of the lights if you are beneath it. For this reason, if you are using CFL light bulbs, you may want to use the ones that are enclosed in a glass bulb and look like conventional bulbs.

Third, this light is huge...as I said before. Depending on your room size, it can be overwhelming. I found on the Internet some sizing guidelines to determine what size light is appropriate. The width of the light in inches should be approximately the length of the room (in feet) plus the width of the room (in feet). In our case, 13 + 7 = 20 inches (the light was 19 inches wide). The height of the light, in inches, should be between 2.5 to 3 times multiplied by the ceiling height (in feet). In our case, we have a vaulted ceiling and at the vault was 11.75 feet, and so height of the light should be between 29.4 and 35.5 inches (this light is 33 inches). I wasn't sure I believe the guidelines but now that the light has been mounted, the guidelines seem to be accurate. Because of the size of this light, it isn't for everyone. If your foyer or hall has eight foot ceilings, this isn't going to work as it would hang too low.. You will need at least an 11 foot ceiling for this. I believe this light comes in one smaller size, so if you use that smaller one, you could use it in a slightly lower ceiling room (but even then, an eight foot ceiling is still insufficient).
