Rheem RTG-95XN 95 Series Tankless Outdoor Heater Natural Gas Energy Star 9.5 GPMRheem RTG-95XN 9.5 GPM Outdoor Series Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater Review
I really was impressed with this product. It arrived in two days and I had to wait for some spare time to install it. We had to remove the existing water heater in order to replace the existing flooring so we needed to install the new heater before the other work could start. The installation of the heater was relatively easy for our house. The studs did not line up with the mounting holes so we installed a 3/4-inch plywood mounting base to the studs over the siding then mounted the heater to the base. We just primed it and painted it to match the color of the siding before doing the install. Since we have an outside mount we have it up a ways from the concrete pad. We were able to center it between a window and door so it looks neat.
Since every installation will be different the plumbing and gas line will be unique to each installation. We drilled holes for the water lines and electrical connection through the wall. We used CPVC for our water lines. The electrical requirements are quite low as there is a 3 AMP fuse in each line. We installed a new auxiliary panel so we could shut of the power through a separate breaker and use the panel for additional electrical connections.
Since this is an outside installation we were not sure if this would be attractive to a thief. In this regard we have the gas line connected directly to the unit using black pipe instead of a flexible line. In our case we already had a gas line for our NG grille. We had to remove the 1/2-inch line and replace it with 3/4-inch line. The coupling is six feet away so there cannot be a quick removal of the unit especially with our gas shut off in the utility room of the house. There is another shut off at the heater if there is a need to work on the unit.
Once the gas, electrical and water lines were run it was time to fire it up and see how it works. Turning on a hot water faucet caused the heater to turn on right away and hot water arrived as expected. There is a slight delay to get water to the sink or shower when it is first turned on. We use a PEX manifold in our home so once the water demand initiates the need for hot water the manifold is provided with hot water. There is only about five feet of insulated water line from the heater to the manifold. In our system there is not any more of a delay than if we were using a regular water heater with a tank. In an outdoor installation there is a need to insulate the water pipes so that there is not that great a heat loss. In our climate in Georgia we do get freezing weather at times but not too bad. There is a built in heating coil within the heater that will keep the heater from freezing.
Now we did have a problem with our insulation when it was first installed. We used the nice rubberized foam to cover the pipes as it is easier to work with and works well. It turned out that Chad our 8-month old Pointer puppy liked it pretty well as he would put his front paws on the wall and chew all of the insulation off that he could reach. I replaced it and he chewed it again. I went and obtained some of the foam type insulation and put that on and then wrapped it with black duct tape and that solved that problem.
The tank-less system works very well for us. Since you do not have a tank it will take a little longer to have hot water arrive at the faucet. We like having the extra space the tank previously used. There is no increase in our gas usage at this point. We have no problems with supplying plenty of hot water to our three showers at the same time and running the washer. I wished we had replaced our tank type heater sooner. If you are able to do the install work along with the low price of the heater through Amazon then it is cost effective.
