Shop Fox W1816 3 Horsepower Cyclone Dust Collector Review

If you have a smaller, home shop I would say forget this machine:
- It is a HUGE - too big for most shops. Assembled it stands about 3-1/2 feet deep by 6 feet wide on the floor, and about 80" high.
- It is extremely noisy. I haven't measured in decibels, but always wear hearing protection when operating it. This is especially necessary if you are in the same room.
- It required a 30-amp 240-volt circuit -- much larger than most home shops can handle
- It generates a lot of heat.

On the other hand, for a medium sized shop it might be perfect.
- It easily handles multiple machines, like a sander, table saw, and radial arm, at the same time.
- It is the only collector I've seen that goes a good job with a large planer, especially in a 1 machine only mode.
- Wireless remote control switch is extremely handy.
- The internal "crank" style handle for cleaning the dust filters is very effective

Some things to consider when you install:
- Make note of the noise and size mentioned above
- I upgraded my collection system from 4" to multiple 6" pipes; this machine can easily handle the volume and you don't want to restrict it.
- I placed my collector in a back room, but mounted the control unit in the main room (as suggested by Shop Fox) so I could make use of line-of-sight wireless remote control.
- The main sawdust collection barrel accommodates 40-gallon leaf bags. So you don't have to buy special bags from SF.
- 40 gallons of sawdust is quite heavy and difficult to lift our of the barrel (but not impossible).
- The dust barrel itself is on wheels, so can easily be rolled out from under the machine.
- This seems to be a very well-built machine.
