Bosch RHH181-01 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Brushless 3/4-Inch SDS-plus Rotary Hammer Review

The Bosch RHH181-01 hammer drill is shockingly powerful for an 18 volt battery-powered unit. I say "shockingly powerful" because I tested it back-to-back with my corded Bosch HD21-2 hammer drill and the RHH181-01 smoked it on hammer drilling performance.

Using a Bosch HC2122 3/4" masonry bit, I drilled through 4" of dense concrete with each drill. This hammer drill operates at up to 1400rpm and drilled through the cement with ease. The 4" hole took 30 seconds. The corded HD21-2 has two gearings. The high gearing wasn't powerful enough to turn the drill bit in the concrete so I switched to the low gearing. The low gearing runs at only 900rpm and the same hole with the corded hammer drill took 90 seconds.

This battery-powered hammer drill was 3 times faster than a corded model!!! I am in disbelief.

Through wood, the corded Bosch HD21 is faster simply because I can put it into high gear and run it at 3000rpm. I don't consider this a major problem because most people spending extra money for a hammer drill need it for going through concrete, not wood.

Because this drill uses Bosch's "SDS plus" system, you can't use the majority of drill bits out there. You trade the convenience of snap-in SDS plus bits with the flexibility of using a much wider variety of bits. I have a lot of existing masonry bits that I can't use with this drill. Bosch does sell an SDS to 1/2" chuck adapter that lets you use existing bits if that is important to you. On a positive note, SDS plus bits snap in quickly and securely and are easy to eject. This saves a ton of time if you're swapping bits a lot.

The RHH181-01 has a knob that lets you select from these modes:

* drill only
* hammer drill
* hammer only

One thing I hadn't seen before was the ability to choose between different levels of shank rotation while hammering. Bosch calls this feature "vario-lock". So instead of pure hammering, you can add a small amount of rotation if that is useful for your particular task.

I only use RHH181-01 for drilling into brick or concrete so I can't comment on how well the hammering feature works.

Bosch includes a standard charger and two of their top-dog 4Ah lithium-ion batteries with this drill. These batteries have a much longer run time than the typical slim-pack batteries (1.3 to 1.4Ah) that Bosch bundles with their less expensive tools. I have a large assortment of Bosch 18V tools and these batteries fit them all. Likewise, my existing slim-pack batteries fit fine on the RHH181-01.

The batteries are lithium-ion and, in my testing, they do not lose their charge when not in use. This is handy because if you charged the battery and then set it aside for a month, it will still be fully charged (or nearly so) a month later. Also, these batteries have a button that you can press that will light up an LED indicator telling you how charged they are. This lets you quickly decide if you should swap out batteries and put it on the charger; you don't have to wait until your drill dies to know that the battery needs charging.

I'm still blown away that this battery-power drill out-performed my corded model. I expected that the portability of battery power would require a compromise in performance. That is not the case with this hammer drill.
