Product Description
To obtain ultimate performance from the JDS dust-force, try adding a 1 micron canister filter. The filter material is spun-bond polyester and the surface area is more than five times greater than that of standard bags. The more surface area, the less restriction on air flow, and the greater the pulling power. Now get high efficiency and great performance at the same time. To clean the canister simply turn the handle and cleaning flappers inside will shake the dust from the filter into the lower plastic bag. The 1 micron canister kit will fit the JDS dust-force 1.5HP and 3 HP models.JDS 16002 1-Micron Canister Kit for Dust-Force Dust Collector Review
I purchased the JDS Dust-Force 1.5 HP unit that came with this canister (JDS 16001) which, for some reason, doesn't come up on an Amazon search. I highly recommend the canister if you get the Dust-Force unit. I have had mine for a year and have been very pleased with its performance. I have a shop in my basement and have not yet installed permanent ducts, so I attach a flexible 4" hose to machines as needed. I recently emptied the collection bag and was impressed when I looked up into the canister after I'd removed the bag. The flappers (driven by the handy hand crank on the canister) do an amazing job of knocking dust from the cartridge pleats. I have used the unit on my table saw when cutting MDF and hardboard, so I was curious to know if the cartridge would get clogged up (as my shop vac used to), but it was clean as a whistle. To be fair, I've never used a collector with felt bags...but it's hard to imagine that they're very convenient to clean. The only think I don't like about the Dust-Force is the geometry of the impeller unit. I occasionally suck up something small and heavy when I am cleaning up my shop (a small stone, nail, etc). On occasion, there is enough suction to get these items into the impeller unit, but not enough to suck them into the collection bag--that requires a ~2 ft vertical rise--so they just rattle around in the impeller cavity until I take off the face plate and fish them out. This is a common design for many 1 and 1.5 HP dust collectors, and it's not that big of a problem...but I might look into the Delta style collector that has the impeller above the collection bag. Anything heavy enough to get that far will go into the bag. Anything too heavy would stay in the hose below the impeller. As I said, it's not a major problem...but it is an occasional annoyance. To minimize this, I sometimes make a "trap" by hanging a section of the flexible dust collection hose--like an inverted P-trap under the kitchen sink--to prevent those little items from making it to the impeller.
Overall, I am very pleased with the unit. It helps keep my shop much cleaner than my shopvac.
