This compact and powerful (1 HP) variable speed router is capable of handling a wide range of routing applications featuring a tool-less modular base design. In the past when using router bits, with guide bearings attached, the user can run the risk of burning the material if the bearing slips during the routing process. With this innovative design, the guide bearing is mounted to the router eliminating this concern. In addition, allowing you to use less expensive bearing-less router bits saves you money. With its large support bases, super fine micro adjustment accurate to 1/256 (1/10 mm), and additional hand-grip, the MFK 700 can be optimally and safely controlled. Featuring MMC (Multi-Material Speed Control) electronics maintains constant speed under load and provides overload protection, vertical base unit with a built-in threaded template guide, and built-in dust extraction shroud; 1.5-degree pitched horizontal base (protects surfaces when edge banding) with V-shaped cutout and sensor bearing guide provide flush trimming, even around corners. Festool MFK 700 EQ Modular Trim Router Set Review

This is a funny specialized tool. It does certain cuts very well
and within its limited capacity it functions as a substitute for
a lipping planer like the Lamello or Hoffman. Those machines
have greater capacity but will not function, as the MFK700 will,
as regular laminate trimmers.

The MFK is precisely made. It's depth adjustment is very limited
however and even a sub-$100 laminate trimmer will provide more
capacity in terms of depth adjustment. Where the Festool excels
is in making highly controlled cuts to edge bandings, both
in the more common position you'd use a standard laminate
trimmer in and in a sideways position with a special base,
included in the kit.

The question is not whether you can make the same cuts with cheaper
tools. You certainly can. Properly set, however, the MFK
becomes practically fool-proof and can go a long way to preventing
workpieces spoiled by the inattentive and accidental tipping
of a regular laminate trim router.

If Festool would meet user demand and actually make a plunge base
for this tool, it would be truly awesome for all kinds of light
mortising and grooving. Festool seems reluctant however,
probably expecting such a release would hurt sales of the
OF1010 plunge router, which is also a useful and well-engineered
tool.

There are a couple of little accessories for the OF1010 that allow
that router to imitate the special functions of the MFK700 kit.
If you only occasionally need the special trimming features of
the MFK, you might find the OF1010's versatility a better option
for you.
