Product Description
Rob Cosman has been woodworking for most of his life. While earning a B.Sc. in Industrial Technology/Furniture Design at Brigham Young University, he was Dr. Dale L. Nishs teaching assistant. Rob has also worked with many of the worlds best craftsmen - including Alan Peters, Sam Maloof, Tage Frid, Monroe Robinson and Peter Korn. After teaching thousands of students to cut dovetails by hand, Rob saw the many problems people had when using traditional dovetails saws. With the goal of enabling woodworkers to assemble their dovetails straight from the saw, Rob designed and developed this dovetail saw to address the problems he had seen. The first two inches of the blade has super-fine, 22 TPI for ease of starting the cut, while the remainder of the blade has more aggressive 15 TPI for finishing the cut quickly. With an extra-heavy brass back and an overall weight of 22 oz., versus 13 oz. of other high-end dovetail saws, the saw itself provides the downward pressure for smooth, vibration-free cuts. Composite bone resin handles have carved finger recesses for a comfortable fit in the hand. A slight .002 inch (per side) set makes for dead-straight saw cuts and produces a .024 inch kerf. Each saw is personally tested by Rob prior to shipping and comes in a beautifully handcrafted walnut and Aspen presentation/storage case. Overall saw length is 15-1/8", blade length is 10", cutting depth is 1-5/8". Includes an instructional DVD.Rob Cosmans Dovetail Saw, Bone Resin Review
After trying my friend's Cosman saw, I can attest it is superb in every respect. It has the progressive tooth pattern so that the tip has finer teeth than the main section of the blade. The fine teeth make starting the cut easier, especially for tyros. The well-sharpened & lightly-set blade follows the initial kerf and tracks beautifully straight.
The brass back or "spine" is thick, sturdy and lends a nice heft.
Some people complain about the Composite handle, but it doesn't bother me at all. It's fat and feels good. The handle is at the right angle for cutting half-blind dovetails. You get a great sense of control with this handle. It has about the same mass as bowling ball material, but the saw is not too heavy. It feels balanced and handles like a Ferrari.
This design came from Mr. Cosman's extensive experience teaching beginners how to cut dovetails. The progressive-pitch concept definitely works and makes accurate sawing easier even for an old fart who has been hand-cutting dovetails for half a century.
If you want the progressive pitch tooth pattern and appreciate modern advancement in materials, this is the saw for you.
Of course, you have to be willing to pay a hefty premium too.
Personally, I respect Mr. Cosman as a craftsman and teacher, so if I had tons of money, I would buy this just to support him. I don't have that kind of money though, and I can make (re-sharpen) a progressive pitch saw from any decent $10 saw.
If you want the same performance with a wooden handle, Adria and Bad Axe tool works both make similar saws in the same price range.
Lie Nielsen makes a beautiful dovetail saw for $125.
Veritas (lee valley) makes a beautiful dovetail saw for $65.
If you know how to sharpen saws, then you can make any decent saw cut well, and you can re-shape the teeth to have the progressive pitch pattern if you want that.
This is for Rob Cosman fans who have the money but not yet the skills to sharpen saws, reshape teeth or cut dovetails with a conventional saw. It is certainly one of the best dovetail saws I have ever tried, and I have used hundreds of saws over the last fifty years.
If you're a Cosman fan and have the dough, buy it. You will not be dissappointed.
