I want to expouse the merits of this saw but am limited by the fact that it's the only table saw I've ever owned or even used. I don't know what to compare it to... what features it has that most don't. But I'll do my best.First (in random order), the insert goes right in and comes right out. So does the blade, with some huge wrenches that tighten and loosen the nut that holds it in with ease. It also couldn't be easier to exchange the splitter with the anti-kickback pawls out for the riving knife. (Sorry if I'm calling everything the wrong name!) What I mean is, when you switch from all-through cuts to cutting a notch, say, it's super easy to switch out the parts.
I haven't got the dado equipment yet, but I hear it's just as simple.
Also, the SawStop runs through a safety check when you turn it on. (Don't worry, it only takes about ten seconds.) There's an attached code interpreter to tell you what the problem is if the lights start blinking a certain way.
Also, the safety feature goes without mentioning! The automatic shut-down if your finger touches the blade... wonderful! Also per safety are the aforementioned anti-kickback pawls(?), and the plastic finger guard (which doesn't hinder use of the saw at all).
The fence is amazing. Very accurate and easy to adjust and easy to take off the saw for cleaning and such. You can even put it on either side to make cuts! The cross cut thing is pretty good too.
I like having the 52" extender table. It makes it a lot easier to make a 4' cut, and the table is useful for other things too.
I'm going to list what I know about woodworking safety now. That's the end of the review, except for this: BUY THIS SAW.
1) Get anti-vibe gloves when using a sander, jigsaw, router, etc. It'll prevent carpal tunnel.
2) Get a padded mat for the above tools to stand on during use. It'll protect your knees.
3) Get rubber safety glasses (mine go right over my eyeglasses), a respirator, and hearing protection. Here's a tip for hearing protection: I use those disposable orange foam things they sell at the drugstore for about $3.00 a package. Over them, I wear woodworking earmuffs. Double the protection.
4) Use your push stick for narrow cuts. Don't be a hero!
5) Router tables are safer than handheld ones and much easier to use.
6) Rags with alcohol finishing liquids on them can combust. Don't leave them lying around. I think you can just put them in the washing machine, but I'm not sure about this. If in doubt, use water-based finishes.
7) Ventilation! Esp with the alcohol finishes.
8) Buy new hardware (screws, nails, etc.). Don't use old rusty ones.
9) Get a tetanus shot anyway. You should get one every ten years, and that's how long one is good for!
10) If you're using old wood that may have nails and such in it, know what you're doing. If hardware hits the blade, it's not pretty. If you're a beginner, maybe just buy precut boards from the home store to cut up with your saw. That's what I do.
11) Pull your hair back. Use good lighting.
12) Wear tight-fitting, long sleeves. Check for and remove splinters.
13) If you're tripping a circuit or something, call an electrician. Don't just keep tripping it.
14) Make sure you get the right extension cord (if needed) from the home store.
15) Have a first aid kit nearby and a phone.
16) With rip cuts, push between the fence and the blade, not the other side of the blade. If you have a 10" panel and you want it to be 8", set the fence to 8" NOT to 2". (If that makes sense.)
16.5) Have a fire extinguisher and smoke alarm nearby.
17) The SawStop saw is the safest one I know of.
18) Relax and have fun! It's like driving. If you know how to keep it safe, accidents don't happen very often. Get crazy and make some sawdust.
