Product Description

The CLPK241-120 includes both the PS130 12-volt Max Hammer Drill/Driver and PS41 12-volt Max Impact Driver. The Bosch PS130 12-volt Lithium Ion Hammer Drill features the shortest head length in class, better balance, and control for perfect working in tight areas. It has 2 speeds, optimized high torque for screw driving and high speed for drilling. Lightest weight at only 2.3-Pound and a 3/8-Inch auto chuck for convenient clamping of drills and bits. Also included is the Bosch PS41 12-Volt Max Impact Driver which offers the precision of variable speeds, a light body, and a short head length. This tool is easy to handle in tight, narrow spaces, while its three LEDs mounted around the head of the driver help in low-light settings. This combo kit is the perfect addition to your existing 12-volt Bosch tool line or a great starter pack for any professional.

Bosch CLPK241-120 12-Volt Max Lithium-Ion 2-Tool Combo Kit with 3/8-Inch Hammer Drill and 1/4-Inch Hex Impact Driver, 2 Batteries, Charger and Case Review

I have had this pair of tools for a couple of weeks now and have been using them at every opportunity.

Previously I had an old Black and Decker cordless 14.4v drill which was far larger, bottom heavy and quite cumbersome not to mention a pain with the batteries discharging on their own overnight and requiring long charges.

These two Bosch tools are compact with a small enough grip to fit most hands. They both use the same small batteries which seem insubstantial compared to what I am used to. They charge quickly in the included charger. So far I haven't had to charge longer than 27 minutes. Battery life is very good; I haven't actually had one run out during a session.

It's really nice to have this pair of tools, rather than the one drill driver, you can have both the driver and the drill ready beside you without having to change bits. This is very useful if, like me, you spend a day installing fitted shelving in walk in wardrobe. I could drill the holes for the drywall fastners and screw the shelving in without having to pause frequently to switch between drill bits and driver bits.

Driver

The driver is stubby with three LED's mounted around the driver bit. They are not super bright LED's which is a good thing. Working in a dark cupboard I was not blinded by glare from the white walls, but could see where I was driving very clearly. The driver bit snaps in place so there is no twisting chuck; just pull the sleeve to release the bit and the drive bit comes out effortlessly. It slides loosely in the direction of the drive so there is slack that makes it easy to locate the screw head and push the drive in position. Controls are very simple. A three way push rod/switch switches between the direction of rotation whilst the center position locks the driver so you can't accidentaly activate it.

The trigger control is smooth and sensitive and gives very precise variable speed with minute adjustment, It's a firm trigger but still allows a great degree of control.

There is a battery indicator with three leds on the handle which tell you whether your full, medium or low on charge.

Drill

The drill is a very compact size with quite a hefty motor. It takes the same small battery as the driver. In fact everything from the trigger back is identical, but the drill has a much longer nose with built in auto twist chuck. There are two sleeves on the chuck: the front ring has 20 numerical torque settings whilst the rear one offers three modes, screwdriver, drill and hammer.

As a driver, the torque could be set low enough to drive screws into plastic RC cars without stripping the hole but has no trouble with large wood screws either.

The chuck will hold a 3/8 drill bit with a little room to spare.

The variable speed, much like the driver has a firm precise trigger.

In the last couple of weeks I used this set to repair the garden fence for the winter, install fitted shelving and with a wire brush attachment to scrape rust off of the grate on our exterior HVAC fan unit. Both tools have been a joy to work with.

If there is one thing I would have liked to improve the drill it would be some kind of level indicator similar to what my old B&D one had. But other than that this drill is better in every way.

Unlike the driver the drill only has a single LED that lights up the work area, which sits quite low casting a shadow above where you are drilling. And like the driver there is a three LED battery charge indicator.

Conclusion

This is a very nice set that work great as a pair. I can testify to this when building fitted shelving, it was really nice to have both a drill and driver close to hand and being able to use either without having to take time out to change bits.

Both are powerful with decent battery life. The batteries are interchangeable and if you're only using one tool, you should be able to easily rotate batteries without having to take lengthy breaks for charging to finish.

The set comes in a nice stylish soft zipper case which still seems quite rugged. Elastic straps hold the tools in place so there is still room for a set of drill bits or driver bits. The driver comes with a flat end Philips bit which comes loose in the case which is a slight niggle. It would be nice if there were some way to hold them neatly inside.

The Lithium batteries do away with the biggest problems with cordless drills of the past. They do not discharge when left unattended. Previously my friends and I would complain about these things because whenever you wanted the cordless tool to use the batteries would always be flat. My previous one would discharge overnight and leave me stranded frequently.
